Syrian diplomat looks forward to closer relations with Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur : Syria is looking forward to enhancingl relations with Malaysia in the coming year, says thes Charge d’Affaires of the Syrian Embassy here, Mohamed Hasanein Khaddam.

A number of visits by top Syrian top officials is on the cards while the Malaysia-Syria Joint Trade Commission meeting will be held here next year, he said during a visit to Malaysian national news agency Bernama here Thursday.

“We are expecting some good things to happen,” he added when he called on Bernama General Manager Hasnul Hassan.

Noting that there had been several visits to Malaysia by Syrian officials, including the Mufti of Syria, Dr Sheikh Ahmad Badr Al Deen Hassoun, over the last three months, he added: “Malaysia is a success story among Islamic countries which could be emulated
by others.”

He also disclosed that the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) was ready to renew a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Bernama signed in 2003 for the exchange of news and journalists for short working attachments at each other’s agency.

“We hope we can come to a productive MoU so that the relations between the two countries can be further enhanced,” he said, adding that Syria was also keen to promote itself through its television soap opera serials.

“We have the most watched television serials throughout the Arab world,” he said.
