Congress non-committal on Amar Singh joining party

By IANS,

Lucknw: Congress leaders Tuesday declined to comment on the possibility of inducting expelled Samajwadi Party (SP) general secretary Amar Singh into the party.

Replying to a barrage of queries from media persons here on the issue, Congress general secretary and Uttar Pradesh in-charge Digvijay Singh said the party has a laid down procedure to induct someone.

“That has to be done in the form of an application to the state unit from where it is forwarded to the high command that will take the final call.”

“Amar Singh has not made any such application so far and if he does so, the same procedure will have to be followed,” he said.

When a journalist sought to know if there were people in the Congress who were keen to have Amar Singh inducted, Digvijay Singh shot back: “Well, there could be also many who are opposed to the idea”.

He declined to answer questions on his own view over inducting Amar Singh into the Congress.

Meanwhile, sources in the party claimed that Amar Singh was trying to play the Thakur caste card to gain entry into the Congress, for which he sought to build bridges with Digvijay Singh, whom he had earlier publicly attacked many times.

Amar Singh was understood to have impressed upon the Congress leader that he could wean away a number of prominent Thakur leaders from the Samajwadi Party.
