No restrictions on free media in Pakistan: Information Minister

Islamabad : Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said Tuesday that the democratic government of Pakistan did not believe in restrictions on free media.

“The Prime Minister requested the Standing Committee on Information to abolish the amendments made in PEMRA act by Musharraf regime on Nov 3,2007,and for this purpose the draft amendment bill was referred back to the committee,’he told media persons after the meeting of NA Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting here.

He said the government was in favaour of restoration of pre-Nov 3,2007 position, however its was the prerogative of the concerned committee to make a final decision.

Kaira said he proposed in the committee meeting that if there are some clauses which are national interest, that could be brought in the freedom of Press Bill later.

He further said that media regulatory laws were in place but the government did not want to create any impression that it was indulging in arms-twisting of the media.

To a question he said that Fakharuddin G Ibrahim committee working voluntarily for preparing the code of ethics for media would present its report soon.
