Punjab to hold conference on GM crops

By IANS,

Chandigarh : The Punjab government Tuesday announced that it will soon organize a national conference to identify the ill-effects of Bt Brinjal and other genetically modified (GM) crops.

While welcoming the central government move Tuesday not to allow commercial release of Bt Brinjal, Punjab’s Medical Education and Research Minister Tikshan Sud said the earlier effort to have BT Brinjal introduced in the country was at the behest of US-based seed companies.

Sud said Indian agriculture was well advanced and would not accept any American seeds here.

The minister said that agriculturists, scientists, activists and others will participate in the conference to be held in Punjab.
