Telangana supporters attack CPI legislator

Hyderabad: Pro-Telangana activists Sunday attacked Communist Party of India (CPI) legislator J.Ranga Reddy, demanding his resignation over Telangana issue. He suffered mild injuries in the attack.

The protesters pelted stones at the Miryalguda legislator’s car in Nalgonda town when he was returning from Nalgonda zilla parishad (district council) meeting, police said.

Police came to the CPI leader’s rescue and dispersed the protesters with a baton charge.

Activists belonging to Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) are demanding resignations of all elected representatives from Telangana to protest terms of reference of the Srikrishna panel constituted by the centre to look into issue of statehood.

The JAC has rejected the panel’s terms of reference, saying these were unfavourable to the demand for Telangana state. All 10 legislators of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) have resigned but the legislators of the ruling Congress, opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and other parties have refused to quit.

In Nizamabad district, protesters laid siege to the house of TDP legislator G. Goverdhan, demanding his resignation.

Information and Tourism Minister J.Geeta Reddy also faced protest in Zaheerabad town of Medak district. Demanding her resignation, protesters disrupted a meeting of the Congress party, forcing her to leave the meeting without addressing it.

Protests were also held Sunday in Warangal and other districts with students taking out rallies and demanding all elected representatives quit.

Meanwhile, Information Technology Minister K.Venkat Reddy told reporters that he would quit the Congress if a separate Telangana state is not formed in six months.

Nalgonda parliamentarian G. Sukhender Reddy said he would raise in parliament the issue of suicides by pro-Telangana students and youth.
