Kapurthala: Officials of the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in this Punjab town Monday claimed to have made the country’s first air-conditioned double-decker prototype coach.
“This is the country’s first double-decker coach and our engineers have completed it in a record time of just eight-months. We will start using this air-conditioned coach on trial basis by the end of March this year,” said Pardeep Kumar, general manager of the RCF.
He added: “Based on the response that we get during the trials, we will start manufacturing more such coaches in the coming months. Exact number of similar coaches that we will manufacture will be decided only in the next rail budget.”
The proposal for manufacturing double-decker coaches was made by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee in her railway budget last year.
She had stated that double-decker coaches were required to meet the rapidly increasing rush of commuters in trains.
Kapurthala town in Punjab is around 200 km from state capital Chandigarh.
