Asma Saleem wins Sahitya Akademi’s award-2009

New Delhi: Prominent scholar and litterateur Mrs. Asma Saleem has been nominated for Sahitya Akademi’s award-2009 for her Urdu translated book Safar.

Sahitya Akademi, India’s national academy of letters, every year selects translators of India’s 24 languages for the award. The award carries 50 thousand cash amount along and commendable certificate.

The list of awardees for 2009 has been announced recently has translators of 23 languages including Asma Saleem in Urdu for her translation of Amrita Pritam’s book in Punjabi language Sunahre in Urdu with the title Safar. This book has been published by Sahitya Akademi in 2003.

The award will be given in a function held by Akademi in August 2010.

Mrs. Asma Saleem is a well known name among literary world. Her articles, analyses and translations have been published in various newspapers and magazines.
She started her carrier with leading Urdu daily Rashtriya Sahara long ago and traveled a long journey in the field of media and journalism.


Safar

She had been professional translator and proof reader approval by the Publication Division, Govt. of India. She has assisted Mr. Farhat Ehsas in the translation of Sachar Committee Report from English into Urdu in 2006 and also has been co-translator of Mr. Jaswant Singh’s book ‘Jinnah: India-Partition and Independence into Urdu in 2009.

Besides, she has done many other literary works including assisting Prof. Tanveer Ahmad Alvi in the translation of Mirza Ghalib’s Persian letters into Urdu and translation of book on Amrita Pritam “Amrita-Imroz.”
