Thousands of Pakistan troops launched a major offensive against the militants in South Waziristan in October.

Some 30,000 troops took part in the operation and the army has now taken control of most of the areas and the militants have fled.

Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that Pakistan Army is carrying out successful operation against terrorists in tribal areas and have killed 650 militants so far in South Waziristan.

“The Army has achieved tremendous success in very short time in the on going war on terrorism and has taken control of major towns in South Waziristan,” General Abbas said, according to state radio.

He said operation is continuing as terrorists have fled into other areas and the Army is chasing them.

He added that over 2200 militants have been killed in operations in Swat valley in the northwest and Waziristan region.

He noted that 1700 soldiers and officers have lost lives in these operations.

To a question, General Abbas said that 50 militants have also been arrested in South Waziristan operation.

Answering a question, he said the international community should provide technical assistance to Pakistan Army besides provision of latest equipment to wipe out terrorists.

Pakistan Army has trained manpower which comes up all international standards but it lacks technology and equipment, he said.

He said the Army also achieved a tremendous goal of repatriation of over two million internally displaced persons of Swat and Malakand division within a short span of three months.
