New Delhi : Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath Friday apprised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about developments in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case that has grabbed national headlines.
Tirath had gone to meet the prime minister to wish him on New Year day and also apprise him about the case. National Commission for Women chairperson Girija Vyas was present on the occasion, official sources said.
Tirath, speaking to reporters later, said the prime minister had expressed concern over the 19-year-old case and said that steps should be taken that such incidents are not allowed to go unpunished in the future.
Ruchika was 15 when she was molested by former Haryana top cop S.P.S. Rathore in 1990. She committed suicide three years later allegedly due to harassment of her and her family by Rathore after she filed a police complaint. Rathore was Dec 21 sentenced to six-month jail and Rs.1,000 fine, evoking widespread protests over what people called light punishment.
