Samajwadi Party MP, nominee booked for violating poll code

By IANS,

Lucknow : A Samajwadi Party (SP) parliamentarian and a party nominee have been booked for violating the model code of conduct for the coming elections to 36 seats of the Uttar Pradesh legislative council, an official said Tuesday.

“Ghanshyam Anuragi, the Samajwadi Party MP from Jalaun, and Indrajit Singh Yadav, the party’s candidate for the legislative council polls from the Jhansi-Jalaun-Lalitpur local bodies, have been booked for violating the code of conduct,” Jalaun’s Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Rajendra Kumar told reporters.

Anuragi and Singh had participated in a meeting of gram panchayats and solicited votes, he added.

The meeting took place Dec 31 in the Bodhpura area of Jalaun.

However, the case against the two leaders was only registered Monday night at the Kotwali police station in Jalaun, some 200 km from Lucknow.

Polling for the 36 seats of the Uttar Pradesh legislative council from the local bodies constituencies will take place Jan 7.

Elected representatives of the three-tier panchayat bodies, including the village pradhans (headmen), block pramukhs (chiefs), members of the zila panchayat and block development committee, and elected representatives of the urban local bodies constitute the electoral college.
