Chennai: Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu and AIADMK general secretary J.Jayalalithaa Wednesday criticised Governor Surjit Singh Barnala’s address to the assembly and said it lacked long-term vision.
“At a time when sugarcane farmers are demanding a price of Rs.2,000 per tonne, it is disappointing to note the governor reiterating the existing price of Rs.1,550 per tonne that includes freight cost,” Jayalalithaa said in a statement Wednesday.
Referring to the governor’s statement that 211,356 acres have been allotted to landless farmers, Jayalalithaa wondered what happened to the remaining land as the ruling DMK’s manifesto states that 55 lakh acres would be distributed among landless farmers.
She said the government’s stand on the Mullaperiyar Dam, urging the central government to increase its height while preventing Kerala from constructing a new dam, is nothing but an eyewash as the DMK is in power at the centre as well.
“The governor’s speech is silent on Cauvery, Pallar and Ponnaiyar, giving rise to the feeling that the government thinks there is nothing more to do for sorting these issues,” she said.
