Lucknow: A lawyer had a narrow escape Tuesday when unidentified assailants opened fire at him in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district, police said.
Unidentified men riding a truck opened fire at Shivakant Tripathi, while he was driving his car. However, he was not injured in the incident, police said.
“Tripathi was attacked in the Gagankhera locality, where some unidentified men started firing at his Innova car from a truck,” police inspector R.B. Chauhan told reporters in Unnao, some 50 km from Lucknow.
“A case has been registered following the incident,” he added.
Earlier, Tripathi had filed a criminal case accusing Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Amar Singh of financial fraud.
In the case Tripathi had accused Singh of using illegal means not only to bring about the merger of a number of companies into six companies owned by him, but also artificially raising the share prices of these companies.
Initially the Uttar Pradesh government had passed on the FIR to the Kolkata police on the plea that the companies referred to in the complaint were based there. However, the Kolkata police returned the FIR, remarking that Uttar Pradesh police were free to initiate action as the Kolkata address of the companies did not bar them from proceeding in the case.
The case was transferred to the Uttar Pradesh police’s Economic Offence Wing (EOW), which is enquiring into the matter.
