OPD services in both private and government hospitals as well as services in private nursing homes were affected due to the doctors’ strike, and adversely affected patients.

The emergency services were, however, kept out of the strike.

Doctors did not report for duty in Jamshedpur and other cities of the state as they observed the one-day strike.

“Due to the rising incidents (of attacks), we have called the one-day strike. If we are not feeling safe, then how we can we treat the patients?” said A.C. Akhori, a doctor and the Jamshedpur unit president of Indian Medical Association (IMA).

On Monday, unidentified criminals shot Ashish Roy, head of pediatrics of the Tata Main Hospital (TMH), Jamshedpur. Criminals barged into his clinic at his house Monday evening and shot at him. He has been admitted to the TMH, where his condition is said to be critical.

On December 17 last year, unidentified criminals shot dead Prabhat Kumar, another doctor of the TMH.

“There is need to improve policing in the city. The attack on doctors and businessmen is a cause of concern for everyone,” former chief minister and Jamshedpur BJP Lok Sabha MP Arjun Munda told IANS.
