Action against Maoists still pending: RSS chief

Kolkata: Terming Maoist guerrillas as the greatest threat to the nation, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat Friday said the union government has “at last” woken up to the challenge though it still needs to act.

“The centre has at last woken up to the reality of the challenge but the action is still pending. The Maoist insurgence has to be stopped,” Bhagwat told a press conference here.

He said the government would have to address a few basic problems in the society to combat the Maoist issue.

“The centre should strictly address the problems of acute lawlessness and strengthen the intelligence network in the regions where this problem is being reported.

“It must expedite developmental projects in those violence-hit regions and involve the local people in that process and stop exploiting the common masses,” the RSS chief said.

Commenting on the central forces’ offensive launched on the rebels, he said: “I cannot say whether the ongoing police operation is sufficient or a military action is needed. It’s a matter of judgement depending on the gravity of the situation.

“But I, personally, don’t think the matter has aggravated to such an extent that military deployment is necessary to control the situation.”
