New Delhi: The Congress core committee met here Friday to discuss price rise and the Telangana statehood issues.

Congress sources said the meeting discussed the prevailing situation in Andhra Pradesh and the spurt in agitation for a separate state of Telangana.

The meeting, which took place at the residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was attended by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Defence Minister A.K. Antony.

The sources said the meeting also discussed steps taken by the government to check rise in prices of essential commodities.

Leaders from Telangana and those opposed to creation of a new state have met senior Congress leaders in support of their demands over the past two days.

While a delegation of members of parliament opposing creation of Telangana met Mukherjee Wednesday, pro-Telangana leaders met Antony Friday.

State Congress president D. Srinivas met Sonia Gandhi Friday. He said later that she expressed concern over suicides by students and stressed the need for maintaining peace.
