Professors of nearly 35 central universities have been protesting since Thursday. On Friday, hundreds of them marched to the human resource development ministry from Mandi House here to highlight their plight.

On Jan 16, the University Grants Commission (UGC) approved a regulation that underlines that the promotion of central university professors will depend on their research output and teaching activities. Years of experience thus will not be the sole criteria for promotion of such teachers.

The Federation of Central University Teachers Associations (FEDCUTA) is protesting against it.

“There are some negative conditions, which seem flimsy and we are protesting against them,” Aditya Narayan Mishra, president of FEDCUTA said.
