Medical ethics should be self regulated: Dinesh Trivedi

New Delhi: Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Trivedi Thursday said medical ethics should be self-regulated.

“Ethical practices cannot be governed by regulations. The doctors of the country should self-regulate. Only then shall we see a remarkable difference in medicine practice,” Trivedi said in a message to doctors at a conference on medical ethics.

S.K. Sarin, chief of the newly-constituted board of governors of the Medical Council of India, said that ethical medical practices were the key to success of a hospital and doctors.

“Ethical practice is the key to success of a doctor or hospital. The board will maintain a vigil but it cannot regulate individual actions. It depends on doctors to maintain the standards,” he said.

Sarin also emphasized on accreditation of hospitals to maintain standards.

“Just like colleges and universities, hospitals should also be accredited and it should be done by the people,” he said.

The board took over the MCI after its then chief Ketan Desai was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation April 23 for demanding Rs.2 crore to grant recognition to a medical college in Punjab. Two employees of the college and an alleged middleman were also arrested.
