Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party will stage street protests across Uttar Pradesh July 5 as part of the nationwide strike against the rising prices of essential commodities and petroleum products.
“While Samajwadi Party will go hand in hand with other Left parties, who have given a call for a nationwide bandh on July 5, we will concentrate in a big way in Uttar Pradesh,” party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav said at a press conference here Thursday.
Asked to explain the dichotomy of supporting the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime on one hand and staging protests on the other, he said: “We extended support to the Congress-led central government because we neither wanted the nation to plunge into yet another general election in such quick succession, not did we want to allow communal forces to get a chance to take over the reins of governance”.
