Hyderabad: The Election Commission has received an application for registration of a new political party ‘YSR Praja Party’, named after former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who was popularly known as YSR.
The poll panel, in a statement Friday, said one S. Venkataramana Reddy of Kadapa district submitted an application July 5. It could not be confirmed if Venkataramana is a follower of YSR’s son Jaganmohan Reddy or had filed the application at his behest.
“This application is being examined in the Commission in accordance with due procedure,” the panel said.
The statement also said one Mahaboob Basha of the same district had submitted application on Nov 13, 2009 for registration of ‘YSR Congress Party’.
According to the application an association was formed on Sep 18, 2009 with Basha as the president.
However, the commission rejected the application as it should have been made within 30 days from the date of formation of the association under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The clarification came amid reports that Jaganmohan Reddy is planning to float a new political party in the name of his father.
Defying the Congress leadership, the Kadapa MP is currently conducting ‘Odarpu yatra’ in the state to meet families of those who died of shock following the death of his father in a helicopter crash last year.
Followers of Jagan have already denied reports that he was planning to quit the Congress party and float a new outfit.
