New Delhi: The Congress Sunday criticised Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa for giving a clean chit to the Reddy brothers over allegations of illegal mining, terming it “shocking”.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said though Yeddyurappa’s announcement was shocking, it was not surprising.

“The protectors or supposed protectors are now predators,” he said, adding that there was an absolute abdication of the rule of law in the state. “The loot is brazen. The loot is completely uncircumscribed,” he said.

Singhvi said the state government was avoiding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged illegal mining.

Yeddyurappa Sunday said there was no proposal to drop the Reddy brothers – G. Janardhana Reddy and G. Karunakara Reddy – from his ministry over illegal mining allegations and accused the opposition of making false charges against the Reddy brothers.

Karnataka Governor H.R. Bharadwaj last week had asked the chief minister to drop the ministers. Bharadwaj had met President Pratibha Patil over the matter as the opposition Congress and Janata Dal-Secular legislators held a sit-in in the Karntaka assembly pressing for a CBI probe into the illegal mining.
