The numbers of child labourers in the country came down from 1.26 crore in the 2001 census to 0.89 crore during 2004-05, minister of state for labour and employment Harish Rawat informed the Lok Sabha.

The minister said the decline in child labour was due to strict enforcement of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, and the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) scheme for the rehabilitation of child labour.

According to the minister, 14,087 children from Uttar Pradesh, 13,689 from Andra Pradesh, 10,585 from Orissa and 6,500 children from West Bengal were rehabilitated under NCLP last year.
