Gogoi to undergo heart surgeries in Mumbai

By IANS,

Mumbai : Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will undergo cardiac surgeries next week in the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) in Bandra here, a hospital spokesperson said Friday.

Gogoi, who was admitted to the hospital Friday afternoon, has been recommended two emergency heart surgeries following blockages in the blood vessel detected by his doctors.

AHI head Ramakanta Panda examined the 74-year-old in New Delhi Wednesday and advised surgeries.

“A team of AHI doctors is presently carrying out a detailed assessment of Gogoi’s case and his health condition,” the spokesperson told IANS.

In view of his advanced age, the medicos would decide accordingly the exact date of surgeries to be conducted on the ailing leader.

Gogoi complained of breathing problems and increase in blood pressure last Saturday while attending a meeting of the National Development Council in New Delhi chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

He was admitted to the Max Hospital in the capital where Gogoi was advised two surgeries – a coronary bypass and another operation to replace an aortic valve with 70-80 percent blockages in two blood vessels.

The chief minister is likely to be out of action for at least six weeks after the two surgeries are conducted on him.
