Stand on power tariff in three days, Dikshit tells BJP

By IANS,

New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Monday assured a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation of a reply within three days on their demand to reduce power tariff in the capital.

The chief minister’s announcement came after a delegation led by city party chief Vijendra Gupta met her at Delhi Secretariat to submit a memorandum.

“The party wants to draw her attention towards the profit of Rs.1,000 crore that the private power tariff companies have made. But, despite that, the Delhi government supported them and directed power regulator, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), not to announce reduced power tariff,” Gupta later told reporters.

He said the delegatin asked the chief minister to clarify her stand on not allowing power regulator DERC to reduce power tariff in the city.

After the meeting, the chief minister said she heard the demands of the BJP leaders and will reply to them within three days with all the details.

The BJP also accused the city government of conspiring with the private power companies – BSES Yamuna, BSES Rajdhani and North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) – not to let people save their money and to exploit them.

A day before the scheduled announcement of the new reduced tariff, the government May 4 directed the DERC to withhold the order till it gave the regulator the go-ahead. The DERC had said there was a need to reduce tariff rates in the capital.

“Failing to meet the demands will compel the BJP to launch people’s movement against the loot of masses’ hard earned money,” Gupta said.
