Kolkata : In a bid to enhance security in Kolkata Metro Railway, the country’s oldest tube rail, senior officials of the West Bengal government will hold discussions with union home ministry officials in New Delhi Wednesday.
State Home Secretary Samar Ghosh, city Police Commissioner Goutam Mohan Chakraborti, and Additional Director General (Railways) Dilip Mitra will represent the state, while union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai will preside over the meet.
Beginning with five stations stretched over 3.4 km, the 25-year-old Kolkata Metro now connects 21 stations, traverses 22.28 km and carries about 7 lakh commuters everyday.
A senior state government official said Chakraborti met the home secretary at the state secretariat Tuesday and briefed him about the present security system in the Kolkata Metro railway.
Concerned over the threat perception in the underground sections of the Kolkata Metro railway, the state government had earlier urged the union home ministry to strengthen its existing security system, the officer said.
Mitra said: “In the meeting we will discuss enhancing the protection of Metro railway.”
Another state government bureaucrat said: “Apart from upgrading the security of Metro railway, the meeting will discuss the issue of providing security on railway tracks, especially in the Maoist-hit areas”.
