Six Colombian soldiers convicted for killing activist

Bogota : Six Colombian soldiers have been convicted for killing an activist in southwestern Cauca province in 2008, officials said.

Edwin Legarda, husband of indigenous leader Aida Quilcue, was shot dead in December 2008.

A court in the provincial capital Popayan, where Legarda was killed, handed down the verdict Friday. One soldier was acquitted in the case, prosecutors said.

Legarda died Dec 16, 2008, when troops fired at him, as he was en route to pick Quilcue, who had just returned to Colombia after attending a UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva.

The victim was driving a pickup truck belonging to the Indigenous Regional Council of Cauca (Cric) group led by Quilcue at the time of the incident.
