Jayanandan, serving a life term for murder, and Riaz, who had been jailed for 35 burglaries, sneaked out Sunday night, an official said.

The two were housed in the same cell in the prison’s Block 10. Jail officials were baffled when they saw two dummies on the floor, which were meant to give the impression that the prisoners were asleep.

The two had apparently removed two bars of their cell and put them back after getting out. They scaled the high prison walls, the official added.

Police have launched a massive manhunt for the two.

Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had only last week inaugurated a CCTV facility in the jail complex.
