No power in South Delhi for hours as supply trips

By IANS,

New Delhi : Residents across south Delhi had a harrowing time in the scorching summer Tuesday as most areas reported electricity cuts for hours due to excess load on the 220 kw power line supplying power to the area.

Officials attributed the tripping due to the closure of the Bamnoli-Mehrauli power line, till June 20, due to upgradation work as it will be used to provide uninterrupted power to Delhi airport.

“The load of Bamnoli-Mehrauli power line was shifted to the 220 kw Badarpur-Mehrauli line, which led to tripping,” a Delhi power department official said. Electricity to most south Delhi areas is through this line

“Powercuts were reported in south Delhi. The problem started at 11:30 a.m. Electricity in most areas was restored by 5.30 p.m.,” the official said.

The power cuts were reported in South Extension, Moti Bagh, R.K. Puram, Safdarjung Enclave, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Green Park, Hauz Khas, Lodhi colony and Greater Kailash.

“There were frequent power cuts since morning. The weather was also so hot Tuesday and it was difficult to stay indoors. I went to a mall and sat in a coffee shop till the evening,” said Krishna Ganguly, a retired government servant.

The offices and other institutions in the south Delhi survived on power back-up systems but people complained of noise pollution due to running of generators.

“The generators were running throughout the day making noise and it was difficult to even open a window or doors for fresh air,” complained Reeta Chopra, a housewife living in Moti Bagh area.
