New Delhi: Air India, by June 11, has paid Rs 17 crore in compensation to the victims of the Mangalore air crash. The IX-812 flight of Air India Express B737-800 aircraft operating from Dubai to Mangalore crash-landed at Bajpe Airport in Mangalore on May 22, 2010, killing 158 people. There were only 8 survivors among 160 passengers and 6 crew members on board.
“Interim compensation to the tune of Rs.14.06 crores has been paid by Air India as on 11 June, 2010 for 159 cases. In addition, Air India has facilitated the payment of Rs.3.06 crores for Prime Minister’s Relief Fund,” says a Central Government release.
Compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each has been paid to the 151 death cases from Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. Compensation of Rs.50,000/- each has been given to the 8 survivors also from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
Interim compensation of Rs.2 lakh each has been given to each survivor, Rs. 5lakh each for every deceased child and Rs.10 lakh each for every deceased adult.
All bodies have been returned and the 12 that could not be identified were buried in a mass burial. In all, 3 survivors continue to be in hospitals while 5 have been discharged.
