Srinath, Priyadarshan share lead in Asian junior chess

Chennai : International Masters N. Srinath and K. Priyadarshan of India shared the lead with three points each on conclusion of the third round of matches in the Asian Junior Chess Championship here Thursday.

Among girls, R. Bharathi, Pratyusha Bodda (both India), Vo Thi Kim Phung (Vietnam) and Tay Li Jin Jeslin (Singapore) were jointly in the lead with three points each.

Priyadarshan caused the biggest buzz when he defeated defending champion IM Ashwin Jayaram who virtually lost the match in the complicated middle game to concede full points.

In another match, that lasted all of 122 moves at the end of which only the two rival Kings remained on the board, FM S. Nitin drew with second seed IM Vidit Santosh Gujrathi.

On his part, Srinath, playing black, scored over FM Akkozov Berik of Kazakhstan in an English opening while refusing a peace offer from his opponent on the 15th move.

Meanwhile, Bharathi survived a complicated middle game to beat compatriot Mithali Madhukar Patil in 79 moves and Tay came out an impressive winner over PV Nandhidhaa of India.

Phung brushed aside Cholleti Sahajasri in a Bogo Indian game while top seed WIM Padmini Rout scored over K. Lakshmi Praneetha.
