Dikshit asks police to be alert about honour killings

By IANS,

New Delhi : With the incidence of honour killings on the rise in the capital, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Wednesday asked the police to be “alert” and said such matters should be dealt with “promptness”.

“I personally, and through the media, request that the Delhi Police should remain alert and such matters should be dealt with promptness,” Dikshit told reporters here.

The chief minister also termed such incidents as “disturbing”, saying: “I am very concerned and worried.”

In an alleged honour killing, a couple who had married four years ago against the wishes of the girl’s parents was found murdered in north Delhi’s Ashok Vihar area.

While 26-year-old Kuldeep was found shot dead in his car Sunday evening, his wife Monica, 23, died after being attacked by a sharp object at their house.

Shobha, a cousin of the woman, was also found murdered Tuesday.

In another incident, a 19-year-old girl and her boyfriend were electrocuted to death in the city last week as their families objected to their relationship.

The Delhi Police comes under the central home ministry and the state government has no control over it.
