“The citizens of the country ought to know the reasons that led to the imposition of the emergency. They (citizens) need to know why they were deprived of their rights,” said senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh, while addressing a rally in Ambedkar Nagar district, some 200-km from Lucknow.

“The release of the documents would also enable the research related to 1975 Emergency rule… the government should publicise them,” he added.

Launching a scathing attack on the Congress, BJP national vice president Vinay Katiyar demanded the Bharat Ratna, awarded to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi be withdrawn for he was responsible for the killing of hundreds of soldiers by sending Indian Army to fight the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka.

“He had sent the IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Force) to Sri Lanka… He is responsible for the death of several of our jawans… therefore, he does not deserves the Bharat Ratna. It should be withdrawn,” Katiyar said.

BJP state president Surya Pratap Shahi accused Congress of not making any serious effort to contain inflation.

“The Congress governments only projects that it is interested to take up issues related to the common man. It’s just an eye-wash… if the government was really committed to solving the common man’s problems, it would have taken concrete steps to contain the ever-rising inflation,” said Shahi.
