Curfew in Sopore, separatist shutdown in Srinagar

By IANS,

Srinagar: Curfew continued Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore town, a day after the killing of two youths by security forces led to violence, while life in Srinagar was affected by a separatist shutdown.

“Curfew continues in Sopore but the situation there is peaceful,” a police officer said here.

However, there were reports of protesters defying curfew and pelting stones at a few places in Sopore, some 55 km from here.

Authorities imposed curfew in the town to quell widespread violence as two youths were killed in firing by security forces after a mob attacked and torched a vehicle of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Five people were injured in the incident and were shifted to Srinagar for specialized treatment.

Life in Srinagar, meanwhile, was affected by a separatist shutdown called against the killing of the two youths in Sopore.

Markets were closed and public transport went off the roads.

However,, the common entrance test (CET) conducted by the board of professional entrance examinations took place as scheduled with thousands appearing for it.
