German gov’t slams calls for IQ tests of migrants as “absurd”

Berlin : The German government here Monday rejected calls by right-wing politicians who urged intelligence tests for migrants.

Speaking at a routine weekly press briefing, a spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel labeled such controversial demands as “clearly discriminating” and “absurd.”

Christoph Steegmans stressed such calls would only further divide the nation instead of promoting unity.

He was reacting to statements by a Christian Democratic lawmaker in Berlin’s state parliament, Peter Trapp who advocated intelligence tests for migrants.

His calls were underscored by a German member of the European Parliament, Markus Ferber who pointed out that Canada was already conducting IQ tests of its immigrants.
