New Delhi: The central government would convene a meeting of chief ministers of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to sort out issues relating to use of Godavari waters, Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said Tuesday.

Talking to reporters after a delegation of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) met him to complain against “illegal projects” being constructed by Maharashtra over Godavari river, Bansal said the government intends to call “a meeting of chief ministers to find an amicable solution”.

He said water was a state subject and the central government can act in inter-state disputes according to laid down procedures.

Leader of TDP Parliamentary Party Nama Nageswar Rao, who led the party delegation, said that “cultivation in 18 lakh acres of land in Telangana will be affected because of the projects being constructed illegally by Maharashtra”.

The TDP leaders also met officials of the Central Water Commission.
