Caracas : The editor of a Caracas daily, Israel Marquez, was shot dead by criminals attempting to carjack his vehicle, Venezuelan police said.

Inspector Ramon Silva told reporters that the crime occurred Tuesday when Marquez and his wife were preparing to get in the car after having visited one of their sons in the southern part of the capital.

Apparently, Marquez tried to defend himself and his wife with his pistol but the carjackers shot him seven times, the media reported.

Silva confirmed that two of the three murder suspects had been arrested. Two of the men had shot the journalist and the third one was the driver of the vehicle in which they tried to flee.

Marquez, according to the same sources, was transported to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
