PM to open Tamil Nadu’s new assembly complex

Chennai : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the Rs.425 crore new Tamil Nadu assembly complex Saturday.

According to his travel schedule, Manmohan Singh will reach Chennai in the evening and go straight to Omathoorar Government Estate to take part in the inaugural function. He will then return to the capital.

Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and several central and state ministers will attend the function.

Chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Puducherry are also expected to join the gliterring event that will be presided over by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

The new assembly complex is Karunanidhi’s pet project. He visited the construction site regularly once the work started.

At the last assembly session that ended Jan 9, Karunanidhi announced that the next budget session will be held in the new complex.

According to police, more than 5,000 policemen will be deployed at the venue Saturday.

German firm GMP International designed the assembly complex and the construction work was carried out by the city based ECCI Ltd.
