Yadav, accompanied by hundred of supporters, showered flowers and garlanded Lohia’s statue in Gomti Nagar here on the occasion of his birth centenary, overcoming resistance from officials who claimed the party had no permission for the programme.

“They (police) are acting on the directions of the chief minister (Mayawati). She is the one who is creating problems and obstructions for us… She does not want the statue to be unveiled,” Yadav told reporters.

“It is shameful on her part. We waited for the chief minister and the government to unveil the statue at Lohia Hospital. When no one turned up, we decided to do it ourselves,” he added.
