New Delhi: The government Thursday approved a proposal to extend for two more years a Rs.884-crore police modernisation plan in seven union territories of India.
The decision about the home ministry’s proposal was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The police modernisation scheme for seven union territories, as also Delhi, was initiated in 2006 with a provision of Rs.884 crore for five years from 2006-07 to 2010-11.
“This has been extended for two more years up to 2012-13 to give sufficient time to the union territories to utilize the entire amount allocated under the scheme. In addition, the scheme has been improvised by making it more flexible,” an official statement said.
The plan is aimed at strengthening of special branches, building and improving police infrastructure and acquiring latest weaponry and technology for police in the union territories.
