Nuclear weapon, biggest threat to world: Ahmadinejad

Tehran, May 2, IRNA – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday the production and stockpiling of nuclear weapons has endangered the world for 60 years and is the biggest threat against the global security.

President Ahmadinejad made the remarks while talking to reporters prior to his departure for New York to attend the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference at the UN headquarters.

Referring to nuclear armament that threatens world security, Ahmadinejad said the Iranian nation has practical proposals for tackling the issue.

On his travel to New York, Ahmadinejad said it was necessary to attend the nuclear summit there to announce the Iranian nation’s opinion on the issue.

If the New York summit would fulfill its aims, a big stride would be taken towards bringing about the world security, president Ahmadinejad said.

He also said that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an organization with three missions, that it to disarm nuclear countries, to prevent developing atomic weapons and to help countries develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Criticizing the IAEA for failing to carry out its mission, Iran’s president said none of those three goals have been fulfilled worldwide.

Iran believes that all nations and governments are entitled to act effectively in this important field and gain peaceful nuclear energy, he stressed.
