Two employees of Jaypee Karcham Hydropower Ltd, who were repairing some pillars located on the Sutlej banks, got trapped when the water suddenly came from catchment area near Karcham in Kinnaur district Monday morning, Superintendent of Police Yashbir Singh Pathania told IANS on phone.

He said strong currents swept them into the middle of the river where they managed to climb the boulders. They spent more than 12 hours on the rocks waiting for the water to recede.

“When the water receded in the evening, both the stranded people were rescued by clinging to the rope provided by the rescue workers,” Pathania said.

The Jaypee group is setting up 1,000 MW hydroelectric project near Karcham, some 180 km from state capital Shimla.
