England move to Super Eight of World Twenty20

Guyana : England moved to the Super Eight of the World Twenty20 after their Group D match against Ireland was abandoned due to rain at the Providence Stadium here.

Chasing a modest target of 121 runs, Ireland were 14 for one in 3.3 overs when heavy rains interrupted the match for the second time. Play had to be finally called off.

England thus moved to the Super Eight, pipping Ireland on the basis of a superior run rate. West Indies is the other team to have reached the second stage having topped the group.

Ireland put up a spirited bowling performance to restrict England to 120 for eight.

Put in, England lost wickets at regular intervals before Eoin Morgan (45) and Luke Wright (20) steadied the innings with a 41-run stand for the fifth wicket. But after Boyd Rankins broke the partnership, dismissing Wright, England again against lost quick wickets in the final overs.

Rankins took two wickets giving away 25 runs while Kevin O’Brien also got two wickets for 22 runs.
