Both sides had taken “steps to create an atmosphere that is conducive to successful talks”, state department spokesman Philip Crowley said in a statement.

Special envoy George Mitchell had left for the Middle East and was due to return next week.

The US had “received commitments from both sides, and we have made assurances to both sides, that are enabling us to move forward”, Crowley added.

However he emphasised that if either side took “significant actions during the proximity talks that we judge would seriously undermine trust,” the US would “hold them accountable”.
