Mumbai University Senate election: AMP appeal for alumnus enrolment

Mumbai: The Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP) has appealed to all alumnus of Mumbai University to enroll to be eligible to vote in the university’s Senate Election slated for August 2010. “Participate to the fullest, put in all your efforts to ensure equal representation in the highest decision making body of the university,” AMP said.

“The need of the hour for us is to impose a presence in the mainstream institutions proportional to our population; Thus enshrining equality and equal opportunity in all mainstream institutions be they Educational, Cultural, Political, Financial or in any sphere which influences us.”

This initiative will have wide ranging ramifications and positive impact on our community.

The cultural relations within the framework of international and regional organizations stand as the most effective instruments of cooperation geared to achieving the common interests of peoples. Therefore, the cultural, educational and social institutions of Muslim minorities far and wide should contribute to the works of the organizations and institutions and avail of the opportunities they give to build up a network of productive cultural relations geared to serve our interests.

“In this context, we have upcoming Mumbai University senate election for Alumnus Category scheduled in August 2010. This will be an election to elect 10 candidates. The Senate is “the Highest Decision Making Body of the University of Mumbai” Regarding all affairs of the University including fund allocation, recognition etc,” AMP said.
Graduates from Mumbai University can vote for this election. To be able to vote, the alumnus needs to enroll for membership in the general body. Enrolment has already started and will end on 15th June 2010.
Ways to enter the Senate:

18 seats reserved for principals of affiliated and autonomous colleges (currently there is No Muslim in this though we have lots of Muslim run colleges affiliated to MU)

8 seats for management representatives of affiliated colleges (No Muslim here too)

20 seats for Teachers (2 Muslim teachers Holding Senate Currently)

10 seats for graduate alumnus (NO Muslim Currently)

Total 102 seats in Senate and only 2 Muslims.

Required actions:

1) Enroll as many graduates as possible.

2) Lobby with other organizations, candidates and strong people to press for appropriate representation.
