Paris : India’s Somdev Devvarman will face World No. 65 Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland in the men’s singles first round of his maiden French Open which begins here Sunday.
The two players have met only once and Somdev beat the Swiss in Dubai earlier this year.
Both players will be making their first appearance in the singles event at Roland Garros.
This is Somdev’s second Grand Slam singles entry. He made it to the US Open second round last year where he lost to big-serving German Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Marcos’ best results in a Grand Slam has been his third round appearance at US open in 2006 and 2009.
If the Indian manages to score his second straight win over Chiudinelli, he is likely to run into 17th-seeded American and World No.19 John Isner. Though the two have not met on the international circuit, Somdev had beaten Isner in a hard fought final for the 2007 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) title.
Somdev, ranked 109, Friday became the first Indian in 13 years to enter the main draw after going past the tough qualifiers.
