Ahmedabad: The riot-hit Shahpur area of Ahmedabad in Gujarat remained tense but peaceful with no untoward incident being reported Friday, police said.
Ahmedabad Joint Police Commissioner Satish Sharma termed the situation in the affected area as under control.
Clashes between two groups over a minor incident left one person dead Monday. Four people were stabbed.
Trouble began when a marriage procession with loudspeakers blaring passed by a place of worship when prayers were in progress.
Heated arguments resulted in clashes between two communities which spread to other areas of the walled city in Ahmedabad, police said.
On Wednesday, a youth injured in Monday’s clashes died and a large number of people who joined the funeral procession indulged in violence leading to fresh group clashes.
Official sources said six companies of the State Reserve Police (SRP) and one company of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) besides local police have been deployed in the area.
Twelve cases have been registered and 15 people have been arrested so far, official sources said.
