“We will bring out consultation paper on 4G in next one week or 10 days. We will speed up the process and expect to come out with recommendations in the next few months,” Sarma said during a conference here on “The Road to Broadband – Investment & Innovation”.

He said the consultation paper will address issues like adoption of an optic fibre network, cost of bandwidth, tariffs and the connection between telecom operators and Internet service providers.

The telecom watchdog has recently received comments on pre-consultation paper on 4G mobile wireless broadband services, wherein the stakeholders have recommended that India should leapfrog directly from second generation telecom to fourth generation networks.

Worldwide, 59 operators have committed to launching fourth generation telecom services in 28 countries, with up to 22 networks to be pressed into service by the end of this year and another 37 to be added during 2011, as per the watchdog’s assessment.

The 4G networks will allow users to stream mobile multimedia such as TV broadcasts and online games, apart from applications such as Internet TV, video-on-demand, audio-video calls and high-speed data exchange at much faster speeds and clarity.
