Malappuram: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee has reportedly decided not to receive the help of the BJP to get into power in the local bodies. The KPCC gave the direction on the matter to all the districts, adding that the party may receive the unconditional help of independents and even rebels, according to reports.
Unlike the earlier times, this time the BJP has made some gain in the local bodies in several places. The party could win two seats in the important Kochi Corporation and six in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. It also became second after the Congress in the Palakkad and Kasargode municipalities pushing the LDF to the third position.
There are also reports that the Congress had been holding talks with the BJP members in different local bodies where the former had not got majority. But the new direction has put an end to such talks. There are about 15 municipalities, 80 village panchayats and nearly 10 block panchayats where independents and rebels can play decisive roles. However, there are also reports of requests from the local level asking the KPCC to review its direction.
Even though both the fronts have reportedly publicly announced not to receive the support of the BJP, there have been allegations of both fronts getting the help of the BJP in several places during the election campaign. Earlier, the BJP had helped the UDF in several places and there even was a notorious alliance of ‘CoLeaB’ of the Congress, League and the BJP. However, allegation of BJP support turned towards the LDF in this election with even BJP leaders coming up with having made adjustments with the LDF in Thrissur. The CPI (M) also has now reportedly directed not to have any adjustments with the BJP to get into power. The SDPI accused after the announcement of the results that the UDF and the BJP helped each other in the elections and that was a reason for the increase in the seats of the BJP.
