Cop injured as students clash in Panjab University

Chandigarh : A policeman was injured as students of a party clashed among themselves in the Panjab University (PU) Monday, police said. Nearly a dozen students have been detained.

A sub-inspector of Chandigarh police, who tried to intervene in the clash, sustained sword injury.

According to police, members of the Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) were holding a meeting to select their president when the incident took place.

“Members of the PUSU were not unanimous on the name for the party president. There were two rival groups which first indulged in heated arguments that were followed by a brawl,” said a police official here Monday.

“They started throwing cold drink bottles and chairs towards each other. Some students brought swords and sharp-edged weapons and attacked each other,’ he said.

“Sub-inspector Pargat Singh, who tried to stop them, also sustained an injury,” he said.

Police have detained nearly a dozen students for questioning.
