New Delhi : US President Barack Obama was given a red carpet welcome Monday as he entered the Indian Parliament complex and signed its new guest book, the first guest to do so, before addressing MPs from the two houses.
As Obama arrived at the porch of Parliament House at around 5.30 p.m, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh welcomed him and walked him inside the dome-shaped Central Hall.
As the dignitaries entered the hall, waiting MPs and invited guests gave a standing ovation to welcome the US president.
Obama signed the new Golden Book, visitors book, kept for distinguished guests visiting parliament. It was not immediately known what he wrote in the book.
The 88-year-old red sandstone complex has been spruced up for the occasion and the entire heritage complex cleaned up.
