“Some 60 people have taken shelter in the school since Tuesday morning,” a forest department official told IANS. The families hail from Korvapara village, some 400 km north of Raipur. The attack took place Monday.

Chhattisgarh’s vast northern region has seen a sharp rise in man-elephant conflicts in recent years. The government annually pays millions of rupees in compensation for humans killed by elephants.
